GINGIVITIS

Gingivitis

Gingivitis is termed as inflammation of gum characterized by swollen, red and bleeding gums.

Sign and symptoms

Gum redness, bleeding on probing, swollen gums, bad breath and bad taste in mouth. Hot and cold sensation, sweet sensation, bleeding on brushing. Formation of deep pockets between Gingiva and tooth.

Causes of Gingivitis

After gingival recession the detachment of gingiva with teeth occurs, food debris accumulates in the space between gingiva and the tooth. This debris difficult to remove by brushing and bacteria starts accumulation in the space between gingiva and tooth which causes inflammation of gingiva

Gingivitis also starts with the accumulation of plaque (a sticky film made up of bacteria on the teeth that causes due to bad oral hygiene). Bacteria in the plaque produces toxin that cause irritation and gums get infected. Bad oral hygiene is the basic cause, proper brushing to remove all debris from mouth is necessary. Gingivitis is caused by anaerobic bacteria.

If Gingivitis persist long time with no treatment, it leads to Periodontitis, that cause loosening of teeth. Periodontitis can also lead to lose of tooth, if the tooth left untreated.

Treatment
